  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

All my love. Especially the cat lady kind. I'm so sorry. xox

aww! Frank was a beautiful cat. It sounds like he was lucky to find you too. I'm sorry for your loss. I know how much it must hurt right now. My thoughts are with you.

Sending light and love to your whole family and Frank.

He was a wonderful friend - from his kitten pranks of climbing up clothes for more pets to his prowess in Ohio when he would come in from a night on the town demanding to be pet. He is missed terribly.

This is such a loving post. Again, I am so sorry… but I think it is enormously special to have not just great memories, but beautiful images to treasure for always. A friend of mine lost a pet recently… and she had only one photo. One. Crazy.

He will be missed and cherished.

So, so sorry to hear this news. Thinking of you lots, C.

Hi Claire,

I enjoy your blog and haven't had a chance to comment. Just wanted to say how sorry I am. I know how hard it is to lose a furry companion. Frank had a great life with you! Please take care!

Oh, Claire, I'm so sorry. I feel like I've watched Frank grow up here, and I'm so sorry for his early departure.

I was so sorry to hear about Frank - I've enjoyed seeing pics of him & hearing about his adventures since he was a wee lad. My thoughts were with you over the weekend. Many hugs.
